As technology continues to evolve, so do the challenges in cybersecurity. At How to Web Conference, we’re always keen to highlight those who are not just keeping up with innovation but driving it forward. Bitdefender, a global leader in cybersecurity, has launched Voyager Ventures, an initiative designed to support startups tackling critical issues in cybersecurity, AI, and automation.
In this interview, Florin Talpeș, CEO and co-founder of Bitdefender, shares how Voyager Ventures goes beyond financial investment to offer strategic support to early-stage companies, and why this initiative is a game-changer for European startups aiming to make an impact globally.
What is the vision behind launching Voyager Ventures?
Voyager Ventures was launched to capitalize on the emerging supercycle of artificial intelligence, which is poised to drive the next wave of technological innovation, especially in the field of cybersecurity. As AI and automation technologies evolve, they expand organizational attack surfaces, introduce sophisticated cyber threats, and require innovative solutions in threat detection, management, and response.
Our vision is to position Bitdefender as a leader in supporting startups that lead these areas with their agility and creativity and develop solutions to both current and future cybersecurity challenges. By strategically investing in startups focused on AI, automation, and data analytics, Voyager Ventures embodies our long-term commitment to advancing technological progress and cybersecurity at a global scale.
In what ways does Voyager Ventures go beyond financial investment to provide strategic and operational support for startups?
By providing more than just capital, Voyager Ventures aims to be a comprehensive resource for startups, helping them overcome initial hurdles and positioning them for success in the global marketplace. We offer a suite of strategic and operational support through access to our organization’s R&D capabilities and extensive global business network and resources.
Leveraging Bitdefender’s extensive experience in innovation, cybersecurity, and business building, we provide insights into industry best practices, technology development, and threat intelligence. This expertise is crucial for early-stage companies navigating the often complex stages of their growth, helping them enhance their product offerings, accelerate development, and scale their operations effectively.
Given Bitdefender’s long-standing leadership in cybersecurity, how does Voyager Ventures aim to foster innovation in this field?
Bitdefender’s leadership in cybersecurity places us in a unique position to identify and nurture groundbreaking startups that are pushing the boundaries of innovation. Through Voyager Ventures, we seek to support early-stage companies that bring novel approaches to threat detection, management, and response. By providing both financial resources and access to Bitdefender’s extensive expertise, we enable startups to refine their products and scale their operations. We aim to foster innovation by identifying and investing in solutions that address the rapidly evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats in our common mission of making the digital environment a safer place.
What unique challenges are cybersecurity startups facing today, and how does Voyager Ventures plan to support them in overcoming these obstacles?
Achieving success in cybersecurity centers on earning customer trust, with factors such as existing relationships, sincere introductions from trusted peers, support from channel partners and analysts, and access to CIOs/CISOs playing increasingly decisive roles. In a crowded market, where potential customers are risk-averse and skeptical of new products, proving your solution’s effectiveness and value is critical. European cybersecurity startups also face unique challenges, including a fragmented market with varied languages, cultures, and regulations that complicate cross-border operations. They also struggle with a significant funding gap for early-stage ventures and a rather conservative investment approach. Navigating complex legal systems and a strong emphasis on compliance over innovation further intensifies these challenges.
BVV offers more than just financial investment to these companies. It provides strategic guidance on product development, access to selected cybersecurity technologies, and go-to-market strategies while connecting startups to Bitdefender’s global resources and channels. This support helps them focus on innovation while addressing key challenges in completing product-market fit, achieving initial traction, and validating their business model.
Voyager Ventures emphasizes its focus on European startups. How do you see this initiative impacting the tech ecosystem in Central and Eastern Europe?
This strategic focus stems from our strong existing presence and extensive network in European markets, which enables us to provide more localized support and leverage regional opportunities effectively. By focusing on early-stage startups in these regions, we aim to cultivate local talent and entrepreneurial spirit, helping to develop technologies that address both regional and global cybersecurity challenges. Our initiative will not only provide capital but also foster strategic partnerships and mentorship opportunities for startups, further bolstering the region’s reputation as a hub for technological innovation in cybersecurity and AI.
You target startups in the seed and Series A stages. What are the key qualities or criteria you look for when selecting companies for investment?
When investing in seed or Series A startups, we tend to focus on several criteria: a strong team, a clearly defined problem with a potential large Total Addressable Market (TAM), some proof of traction or initial success, and a technological edge that provides a competitive advantage. Timing also plays a crucial role; we do favor a truly long-term view. However, the team is the most important factor at this stage. Ideally, it is composed of founders with deep industry expertise in the domain they’re aiming to innovate. We value their imagination, operational excellence, and the quality of the process they are using to make decisions.
We look for ventures where our input can have a meaningful impact, supporting the growth of pioneering solutions within the markets where we invest. That said, Bitdefender also has a significant interest in seeing the Romanian startup ecosystem grow and flourish. Consistent with that perspective, we’ve invested significant time and energy in working with and supporting Romanian entrepreneurs and startups over recent years.
What trends do you see emerging in the cybersecurity and AI sectors, and how do these trends influence your investment decisions?
In the cybersecurity and AI sectors, several interconnected trends are shaping the landscape.
First, AI Models Threat Surface. A major concern is the security and safety of AI models, which are vulnerable to manipulation through techniques like prompt injection or jailbreaking, enabling malicious actors to exploit these systems. As AI becomes more integrated into critical applications, this unpredictability becomes particularly concerning. Unlike traditional software, where vulnerabilities are patched with precision, the non-deterministic nature of AI models makes it harder to apply fixed safeguards, requiring new methods of monitoring, testing, and regulation.
Second, AI Models-supported Attacks. At the same time, AI is being leveraged in cyberattacks, both to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in code. While AI enhances security in many cases, it also lowers the barrier for attackers by making sophisticated tools more accessible to bad actors, creating a double-edged sword.
Such trends highlight the urgency for stronger cybersecurity measures and open opportunities for startups focused on AI safety, robustness, and regulation. Companies addressing such challenges—whether by preventing vulnerabilities, developing solutions to address the AI governance frameworks, or using AI to detect emerging threats – started to emerge over the last three years. As AI technologies continue to evolve and play a larger role in enterprise budgets, the ecosystem of investable startups in these areas is naturally expected to expand.
Cybersecurity is rapidly evolving with new threats emerging every day. How does Voyager Ventures plan to stay ahead of these trends and identify innovative solutions?
Bitdefender Voyager Ventures benefits significantly from Bitdefender’s extensive expertise and deep industry insights. This strategic advantage enhances its ability to select and invest in innovative startups with high market impact and scalability potential. Furthermore, it strengthens the capacity of Bitdefender Voyager Ventures to support portfolio companies, increasing their ability to align solutions with the evolving challenges in the cybersecurity landscape.
