uberVU – the uber-successful Romanian web start-up

uberVU is a Romanian London-based start-up offering innovative social media monitoring service.  uberVU was founded by Dan Ciotu (CTO), Vladimir Oane (CEO) and Dragos Ilinca (Marketing & Customer Development) in early 2008 and was chosen as one of the winners of Seedcamp 2008, receiving 50 000 $ seed funding. In early 2009 the company raised up to 1 000 000 $ funding for development. uberVU now has customers from 27 countries all over the world, a 6 person development team and uses Amazon to host the service.

Easy social media dashboard

uberVU is the social media dashboard that provides real-time social media analytics and metrics for small and medium enterprises. uberVU keeps track of stories on popular social sites in close to real time and tracks the whole conversations, not just mentions. If you search for a brand on uberVU the application returns whole conversations in a single thread – not just the post, but comments to the post from all over the social web – Blogger, WordPress, Movable Type, TypePad, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Picasa, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Digg, Reddit, HackerNews, Mixx, Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz, MySpace and forum.

uberVU shows keystats around a keyword – number of mentions per day and for the last 30 days, monthly and daily sentiment regarding a certain keyword or brand. For each conversation around a brand, uberVU shows when it got comments around the Web and where it spread and also provides an easy way to compare a brand against the competition as far as the volume of mentions and overall sentiment are concerned.

Brainient – Romania’s video management startup

Seems like Romanian startups have taken over Seedcamp. First it was uberVU in 2008 elected as one of the 6 winners of Seedcamp Week. The next year, in 2009, it was Brainient-, the Romanian video management start-up, who was one of the 6 Seedcamp winners. We are already looking forward to seeing what Romanian entrepreneurs have prepared for this year’s Seedcamp competition.

Make more money with your video content

As far as Brainient is concerned, it offers video management and enhancement tools which allow video providers to monetize their content. Through Brainient’s open-source video management platform, Veevid, publishers can easily upload and manage their content. With Brainient’s optimization application, LayeredBrain, publishers have access to affiliate marketing, in-video advertising, user interactivity, and video analytics.

The entrepreneur behind Brainient is Emi Gal – Romanian entrepreneur, blogger and internet consultant who is, according to his blog, “trying to change the world”. Besides Brainient, Emi is also actively involved with various other technology & internet startups and he is also a speaker and lecturer at various entrepreneurship and internet events.

Codility – smart Polish start-up

Codility is the programming skills automated assessment solution from Poland that saved recruiters time and money by filtering underqualified job candidates. The 3 start-up founders won the 2009 Seedcamp Week and received 50 000 € for developing their solution.

Codility is dedicated to helping companies hire better technical talent by providing automatic assessment tests that can test programmers in a very effective way. Codility’s target audience are software development companies and corporations with high IT demand (telecom, finance). By using codility recruiters will save a lot of time and money that they were previously spending for recruiting software developers. One of the great advantages of the Codility tests is the fact that they provide on-the-job technical skills assessment and are not only a proof of the theoretical abilities of the developer. Another great advantage of Codility is the fact that it can be used by non-tech recruiters, thus saving the time that CTOs and Senior Developers in corporations spend assessing and recruiting new colleagues.

The founders of Codility are Grzegorz Jakacki (CEO & CTO), Tomasz Walen (Principal Developer) and Tomasz Blaszczyk (Technical Advisor). Codility was founded in Warsaw in 2009 and was one of the Seedcamp Week 2009 6 winning teams. After winning the start-up competition the company Codility Limited was founded in London, UK and received 50 000 € seed funding from Seedcamp.

The idea for Codility has originally come to the founder  Grzegorz Jakacki during the time he spent working as a Senior Software Engineer in Beijing, China at Exoweb.net. During that time he spent long hours recruiting programmers, testing their technical abilities and running tiring interviews. Greg then decided that the process needed improvement and worked on developing an automated evaluation method. The automated evaluation method he then came up with had saved around 4000 hours of his time in 2 and a half years. That’s how the idea for Codility came up and, of course, Exoweb became Codility’s first customer generating more than 1200 evaluations per month.

Codility is also recognised as one of the smartest UK’s small businesses in 2010 being announced as one the Smarta100 2010 edition winners.
